4A's Unveil Comprehensive EDI Effort

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ADVERTISING Agencies pulled the curtain up on its electronic data transfer hub--eBiz for Media--Wednesday, which will help conclude a two-decade crusade to find a service that allows the media industry's buy side and sell side to conduct "eBusiness transactions."

The registry, at www.eBizformedia.com, is comprised of two parts: the Advertising Industry Registry and the XML Schema Repository. XML is the software transaction standard developed by the 4A's and MediaPort, a defunct venture sponsored by Interpublic, Omnicom, and WPP, and headed by media veteran Mike Lotito, who now runs his own media audit service, IQMedia.

The registry will allow media buyers and sellers to locate other compatible trading partners, and then use the information in the registry to initiate pure "E2E" or "Machine-to-Machine" communication via Web services, said Greg Smith, the chief information officer of McCann WorldGroup. Smith is the head of the 4A's standards committee on electronic data interchange (EDI).

HIPAA TCS standards provide business intelligence opportunities

Generally, when administrative simplification is mandated by a government agency, the result is enhanced organizational complexity. However, in the case of an exception proving the rule, the enactment of the HIPAA Transaction Code Set (TCS) requirement for electronic data interchange (EDI) has created an opportunity for savvy administrators to tap into a standard flow of data.

"Transaction-based business intelligence is the use of standard healthcare transactions to provide actionable information about the data that is entering and leaving an organization, independent of the sending or receiving systems," said Dr. Joseph Nichols in a presentation yesterday at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference.

Polling and management consulting firm The Gallup Organization apologized Wednesday to a Florida company it had sued for alleged trademark infringement and unfair competition.

Karachi International Container Terminal Selects Xenos GoXML software for Improved Shipping Logistics

Xenos Group Inc. (TSX: XNS - News), the data to e-content company(TM), today announced that Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), Pakistan's leading container handling facility, has selected GoXML software to integrate electronic transaction processing for improved logistics in the country's ports. GoXML will increase communications efficiencies with a single, open-standards based platform across multiple organizations for faster import and export processes. iBridge Capital Group, Xenos' distributor partner in Asia, specializing in enterprise information management, led the project discussion and worked closely with the KICT team to meet their requirements.

KICT is the first pilot site for the Customs Administration Reform (CARE) Project, an in-house initiative of Pakistan Customs and Central Board of Revenue. With the support of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, it will improve efficiencies and reduce clearance times for commercial goods coming into and leaving Pakistani ports. Currently, KICT uses a mix of non-standard EDI messaging and various international standard EDIFACT data formats. These incompatible data formats make communication between KICT and multiple shipping lines, business partners and government agencies a time- consuming procedure.

eBusinessReady(R) Program Certifies TrailBlazer Systems ZMOD Exchange EDI-INTInteroperability Certified Software Facilitates Implementation and Saves

eBusinessReady, an industry-neutral software compliance and
interoperability testing program under joint partnership of the
Uniform Code Council, Inc.(R) (UCC(R)) and Drummond Group Inc. (DGI),
recently announced that the program certified ZMOD Exchange EDI-INT
from TrailBlazer Systems, now the eBusiness Solutions group of
nuBridges, LLC.

An eBusinessReady certified product enables vertical and horizontal
interoperability across the supply chain and distribution channels.
Without interoperability, a solution can strongly inhibit supply chain
implementations and add significant costs associated with supporting
numerous solutions and proprietary protocols.

"We are pleased to offer our customers a value added product that will
ease implementation efforts across their supply chain," said Rich
Brown, General Manager, eBusiness Solutions, nuBridges. "ZMOD Exchange
EDI-INT for AS3 enables companies to take advantage of cost-saving
efficiencies enabled by supporting industry standards. We deployed the
first AS3 implementation at one of the nation's largest and fastest
growing specialty retailers of home textiles, housewares and
decorative home accessories over 4 years ago. This specialty retailer
was able to get over 200 suppliers in production using AS3 in less
than 6 months with a very small staff," added Brown.

Is ebXML already a valid alternative for EDI?

Steve Capell's take:

However, the reason I'm saying that ebXML, as a complete architecture,
can help is because, unlike EDI:

1 - the ebXML architecture provides a means to define in a precise &
machine readable way, ALL the layers of the "interoperability domain"
from transport, messaging, security, information semantics and
choreography (lets call that the "public process"). This gives an
implementer the opportunity (IF the UMM and consequent XSD, BPSS, and
template CPA are precise enough) to build re-usable integrations (lets
call them "private processes") for the most common back-office
applications in the community.
